Young Traders Spark Creativity Across Essex Markets
Young Traders Spark Creativity Across Essex Markets
This summer, Essex has been brimming with creativity as young entrepreneurs brought their passion and products to local markets through the NMTF Young Trader Market Events. With heats in Great Dunmow, Chelmsford, and Braintree, the events served as platforms for young people aged 16–30 to grow their small businesses, connect with customers, and compete for a place in regional finals. Organised by the National Market Traders Federation, The North Essex Economic Board supported the events by offering 16-30yr old entrepreneurs the opportunity for a free market stall alongside £200 seed funding for the participants to help them take their first steps into market trading.

Great Dunmow
Set at the picturesque Makers Market, Great Dunmow’s event featured four creative businesses:
- Wee Bothy Art by Holly Mulinder: A charming collection of watercolour artwork inspired by Scottish landscapes.
- Kaolin Kiln by Eleanor Wellock: Elegant, handmade ceramics with a modern twist.
- Rachel Hanley Illustration: Characterful drawings and prints exploring fantasy and everyday whimsy.
- Bandia Studio by Thea Murray: Handmade, eco-conscious ceramics rooted in Celtic heritage.
Judged by 2023 National Final Winner, illustrator Jessica Moulsher, Cllr Carole Sullivan, and Rachael Clark, the event saw Holly crowned the winner, but the standard was so high that all participants advanced to the next round.
“I had the loveliest time at the makers market last Saturday!” said Cllr Carole Sullivan. “The standard was so high—amazing to see such creativity and talent on display. I even picked up some gorgeous gifts. Nothing beats finding something handmade with heart.”
Inspiring opportunities for Young Market Traders
Chelmsford
Chelmsford’s creative scene was equally strong, featuring:
- Abby’s Art Atelier: Dainty, handcrafted jewellery pieces that blend elegance with accessibility.
- Streets of Lily: A solo art venture filled with vibrant and emotive artwork.
- Heavenly Angel: Homemade ice cream with artisan flair.
Abby took the win, but Angel was also selected for the next heat due to the unique appeal of her product.

Braintree
Braintree brought forward a wonderful range of makers and designers:
- Bead and Button (Ciara Collins Allen): An eclectic mix of beaded skirts, jewellery, and décor, including a commission for pop star Remy Bond.
- Kacey’s Customised Designs (Kacey Ball): Personalized apparel and gifts.
- Bethan-Marie’s Gifts (Bethan-Marie Lilley): Handcrafted cards, woodwork, and T-shirts.
- Chain Imperative (Ferdinand D’arcy Hulusi): Affordable stainless-steel jewellery with bold style.
- Magically Matilda (Tillie): Playful earrings and accessories with a colourful twist.
Each business brought authenticity and flair, making the Braintree market a hub of fresh entrepreneurial spirit.
Judged by Olivia’s Curiosities, Chairman of Braintree District Council Cllr Justin Wrench and Community Engagement Officer Jo Norris, the chosen winners were Magically Matilda and Kacey’s Customised Designs, but all 5 businesses have been invited to the regional finals.

As the competition moves on to Bury St Edmunds and London, and then Stratford for the final on August Bank Holiday Weekend, Essex’s young traders are proving that markets remain vital spaces for creativity, connection, and community.
“This was my first year partaking in the young trader’s competition,” said Thea Murray, “and I found everybody so friendly and welcoming! It was lovely to meet fellow stall holders, and I’ve come away with ideas on how I could improve my stall.”
We would like to congratulate all of our participating entrepreneurs and wish them all the best for the next event. Stay tuned to see if we have a North Essex based Young Market Trader of the Year!
