Start Up Social: Free events and networking for North Essex entrepreneurs

A new initiative funded by the North Essex Economic Board (NEEB) is set to give start-ups, freelancers, and entrepreneurs across the region a powerful boost.

The StartUp Social programme, launching on Wednesday 22 October 2025 at Anglia Ruskin University’s Chelmsford campus, will provide a monthly networking and learning opportunities for local small businesses with big ambitions.

The initiative has been developed in partnership with Arise Innovation Hub, bringing together students, graduates, and local entrepreneurs. Each month’s event will feature expert-led workshops on business-critical topics such as intellectual property, artificial intelligence, and pitching, alongside opportunities to connect with mentors and role models from North Essex’s thriving business ecosystem.

A unique feature of the programme is the introduction of £250 micro-grants, which will be awarded by Anglia Ruskin Enterprise Academy (AREA) to start-ups with strong growth potential. Combined with mentoring and practical support, these grants will help unlock opportunities for innovation, resilience, and long-term business success.

The programme is fully funded by NEEB, which represents a partnership of local authorities across the region working together to ensure inclusive, sustainable economic growth. StartUp Social forms part of NEEB’s commitment to helping small businesses overcome barriers, access networks, and build the confidence needed to contribute to the regional economy.

“Supporting start-ups is a vital part of our strategy for economic growth in North Essex,” said Councillor Ivan Henderson, Chair of the North Essex Economic Board. “Through initiatives like StartUp Social, we are investing in people, ideas, and communities to ensure the region remains a dynamic and competitive place to do business.”

StartUp Social is free to attend, with places available for ARU students, graduates, Arise-based businesses, and a limited number of local start-ups.

The first StartUp Social event will take place on 22 October 2025 at ARISE Innovation Hub in Chelmsford.
